G'day, I'm Mitch
I was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria, on Gunaikurnai Country, and am a proud descendant of the Yuin people from the South-East Coast of New South Wales. My connection to Country has shaped how I view the environmentβnot as something to use, but something to care for and protect.
Founded in 2023, Gardening on Country was created to support a circular economy by turning recycled plastic into practical, durable gardening products. The idea was sparked during a family photoshoot at the beach, where seeing plastic waste scattered across the sand raised a powerful question: what if this plastic could be given a second life?
Today, Gardening on Country diverts plastic from landfill and waterways, transforming waste into useful tools that honour Country and help protect it for future generations.
β€οΈ More Than Gardening Tools
Gardening on Country is about more than products.
It is about:
- Caring for Country
- Reducing waste
- Supporting circular economies
- Creating practical solutions from recycled materials
- Inspiring more sustainable ways of thinking
Since launching, Gardening on Country has:
- Repurposed more than 1.5 million bottle caps
- Been stocked in selected Bunnings stores
- Won the Kinaway Victorian Aboriginal Business Award β Up and Coming Business
- Exhibited at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show
Why buy our tools?
Our gardening tools are made from 100% post-consumer plastic bottle caps. We source this plastic through cafes, food vendors, and public donations, helping keep waste out of landfill and our waterways.
Once collected, the bottle caps are thoroughly washed and sorted by colour. They are then shredded into small pieces and melted down using our extruder, which heats and presses the recycled plastic into moulds.
This process transforms everyday waste into durable, practical gardening toolsβgiving plastic a second life.
